Abstract

THE PAPER GIVES DETAILS OF SIX SAFETY FEATURES WHICH HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED IN THE FIRST UNITED KINGDOM EXPERIMENTAL SAFETY MOTORCYCLE (ESM1). THESE RESULT FROM THE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM WHICH HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT BY THE TRANSPORT AND ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY SINCE 1973. THE FEATURES ARE: SINTERED METAL DISC BRAKE PADS; ANTILOCKING BRAKES; INCREASED CONSPICUITY; DIGITAL DISPLAY SPEEDOMETER; CHEST PAD; LEG PROTECTION. THE TECHNICAL BACKGROUNDS TO THESE FEATURES ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED AND PROGRESS TOWARDS GENERAL ADOPTION IS INDICATED. THE PAPER ALSO DISCUSSES THE TRENDS IN THE USAGE AND ACCIDENTS OF MOTORCYCLES DURING THE LAST TWO DECADES AND INDICATES THE LIKELY INFLUENCE OF LEGISLATION. THIS STUDY TOGETHER WITH TWO ACCIDENT STUDIES FORMED THE BASIS OF THE DEVELOPMENTS LEADING TO EACH OF THE SIX SAFETY FEATURES. THE FIRST FOUR IMPROVE ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE AND THE OTHER TWO REDUCE THE RISKS OF INJURY.(A) FOR THE COVERING ABSTRACT SEE IRRD 112061.
