Abstract

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is poised to enter the 21st Century a leader in supporting transit capacity research in the areas of operations, travel demand, vehicle engineering and fixed facility engineering. This presentation will first set the context within which transit capacity research is conducted, discuss specific capacity research that is underway and end with thoughts on future activities. Unlike the post 1991 period, stable funding and opportunities for collaborative research efforts will assure more extensive transit capacity research. This is evident through on-going research on bus operations in arterials on exclusive lanes, low floor buses, the location of bus stops on major streets and highways and on rail signalling systems, turn-back restrictions, speed limitations, station capacity, fare collection system capacity and vehicle design.
