Abstract

A brief historical description of the research work to make passenger cars safer is given, describing first, the geometric phase, which sought to limit intrusion into the passenger compartment, and second, the biomechanical phase, which reproduced the stress undergone by a vehicle in a real accident in order to determine the degree of protection afforded a passenger.
