Abstract

The article discusses some of the key issues arising in the use of fibre optics for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) solutions, with special reference to recent US project installations. Fibre optics offer high bandwidth and high reliability communications links across large geographic areas. The continuing application of advanced technologies into ITS solutions will require the integration of innovative fibre optics communication links and networks. The key to successful integration will be the selection of robust, fault-tolerant fibre optics systems and networks that support a wide variety of data, voice, and video interfaces, while ensuring interoperability and functionality through adherence to standards. The widespread application of ITS solutions will be very beneficial. Improved traffic efficiency will reduce journey times and increase traveller safety. Cost reductions, achieved by such automatic functions as toll collection and commercial vehicle inspection, will free operating funds for other, more urgent needs. Enhanced management of commercial vehicle operations will lead to greater productivity. The article describes four examples of fibre optics ITS, all in the USA, which represent ITS applications along traffic corridors, bridges, and tunnels.
