Abstract

In order to provide remote continuous information about current events and daily loading levels on crowded roads, fiber optics techniques have been used for both sensing and networking. This paper reviews the three fundamental applications where optical fibers play an important role, weigh-in-motion as a powerful sensing structure capable of complete traffic monitoring, videosurveillance and emergency call networks, both as a transmission media for networking.
