Abstract

General Motors introduced in its 1967 passenger cars a new innovation in the concept of vehicle safety. This innovation, called the "energy absorbing steering column", was evaluated in the laboratory and in prototype vehicles before its introduction to the public. Various aspects of the performance of the energy absorbing steering column are investigated.
