Abstract

This paper documents investigations of "air bag" crashes. A full range of frontal crash severities are presented with injuries of Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) 1-2 to AIS 5-6. Also detailed are the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) alert systems for crash notifications. Most occupants sustained minor injuries. Those not wearing the 3-point restraint had more minor injuries than the restrained, and the occurrence of higher level injuries (AIS equal to or greater than 2) was found more often in the non-belted.
