THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE PERFORMANCE OF THE VOLKSWAGEN AUTOMATIC RESTRAINT SYSTEM WHICH CONSISTS OF A TORSO BELT WITH DUAL SENSITIVITY AUTOMATIC LOCKING RETRACTOR, KNEE BOLSTER, AND SEAT AND SEAT BELT ANCHORAGE ON THE SEAT FRAME. RESULTS OBTAINED IN LABORATORY IMPACT TESTS WITH VEHICLES FITTED WITH THE AUTOMATIC SYSTEM AND WITH THE THREE POINT BELT SYSTEM ARE GIVEN TOGETHER WITH DETAILS OF THE TYPE AND DISTRIBUTION OF 147 REAL ROAD ACCIDENTS IN THE USA, AND OF THE FREQUENCY AND SEVERITY OF THE INJURIES OBSERVED; EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON 47 HEAD-ON-COLLISIONS.
