Abstract

In order to verify the effectiveness of the continuous road surface temperature measuring system using optical fiber temperature distribution sensors in the management of roads in winter (viz. snow removal, salt-sprinkling, etc.), the authors have been carrying out field experiments since last year. Last year they succeeded in taking appropriate measures such as snow removal, salt-sprinkling on the road, etc. by using the newly developed system. This year they are keeping on their experiments (for verification) in order to put the supportive task of last year into effect. The results showed that the system helps to decide the timing of initiation and halt for salt-sprinkling and that it saves amount of salt-sprinkling on road maintenance.
