Abstract

By using supplementary high-beam near ultraviolet headlamps fluorescent road markings and clothes can be seen at much greater distance. The Swedish National Road Administration has equipped 100 km of public roads with fluorescent roadmarkings and delineator posts. Volvo and Saab have equipped a number of cars to carefully evaluate the system. The headlamp system design is presented briefly. This paper also describes the tests run to evaluate the headlamps. Some of these were on open roads and some on a closed test circuit. The test methods used and the visibility ratings recorded are presented and discussed. The system has proved to work well and the results are encouraging. (A)
