The Masterplan for the Bicycle is the framework for the improvement of the bicycle as an alternative in the mobility control. The aim of this study is to get an insight into the importance of the bicycle in regional traffic and transport models. The study is aimed at the three Northern provinces of The Netherlands, with about 300 zones and 1.6 million inhabitants. A comparison of the part of the bicycle with the part of the public transport in the inter-zonal traffic shows that these two transport modes are supplementary to each other. Together they share 20 to 25% of the total inter-zonal traffic. It is estimated that untill the year 2010 the total of slow traffic will decrease by about 15%.
