Abstract

This report studies pedal cyclists' behaviour related to infrastructure. The report is restricted to the approach of crossroads between two traffic arteries in the built-up area of the city of Rotterdam. Data has been analyzed using non-linear canonical correlation analysis, supplemented by hypothesis tests. An attempt is made to explain why cross roads laid out with separate cycle paths are less safe than those (non-separate) cycle lanes, while separate cycle paths are safer than cycle lanes road sections. Improvements of the infrastructure, concerning spatial design as well as traffic control engineering are indicated.(A)
