Abstract

The development of the Volvo 3-point safety harness which became standard equipment in Volvo cars in 1959, is described, just as the retractor belt which became standard in 1973. The effectiveness and usage of the devices are discussed. The effect of the 1975 law of compulsory use is discussed as is passive belt and air bag systems, human tolerance to injury, and injuries related to submarining.
