Thirty subjects participated in an experiment testing the predictions of two well-established models of the modality effect and one alternative interpretation- the distribution of processing hypothesis. Both the size and the extent of the modality effect were considered. Finally, the mechanism responsible for the utilization of cognitive capacity is discussed.
