Abstract

Safety measures for traffic jams on the A76 at Bocholtz. Traffic jams are a problem for traffic and can have serious consequences when there are multiple collisions. This is the case at the border crossing on the A76 at Bocholtz. In April 1991 , there were three serious accidents before the border on the A76, on the Heerlen section in the direction of Aachen. In each accident a lorry drove into a stationary line of lorries. Following these accidents, measures were taken which should prevent a repetition of such accidents in future. In the first instance, these measures involve more intense police supervision, the adaptation of the parking for lorries at the border, and a faster processing of customs formalities. An automatic safety system for traffic jams concludes these measures. This system will be operational on the A76 trunk road from the spring of 1992. This brochure provides more information about the safety system, which is unique in the Netherlands. (Author/publisher)
