Abstract

The complexity of human technical systems is compared with that of natural biological systems that have had millions of years to evolve. It is suggested that to achieve good results, human systems will require intervention because of their rapid rate of change. Certain patterns are common to both systems, particularly where body energy is involved, as in walking. Consequently car owners are disinclined to walk to transport pick-up points or to local facilities. It is suggested that making the distance away that a car can be parked equivalent to the distance to a transport pick-up point could change modal choice. For the covering abstract see ITRD E116128.
