Abstract

Finite Element Analysis results are presented of a 5 mph barrier impact test of a generic bumper beam for a passenger vehicle. The finite element model was analyzed using the new MADYMO 5.1 FEM module. The bumper beam geometry was modelled in shell elements, impacted by a rigid barrier plane. The size of the model could be reduced by applying symmetry boundary conditions on the vehicle center line. A commonly used sheet molded thermoplastic composite represented the bumper beam material.
