Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in Finland. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population, c) employment, d) education, e) the economy and f) temporal patterns. The transportation system is described including a) the structure of the public transport system, b) car ownership, c) urban and regional transport in Helsinki, d) interurban transport and e) rural transport. Figures are provided for the frequency, distribution and average trip length by mode in 1981 and 1986. Finland's policy making structure, its main problems and unique features are outlined. Statistics are provided for energy consumption and road accidents.
