Abstract

This first special report to the Congress of the U.S. on alcohol and health describes broadly certain existing areas of knowledge about alcohol, its historical and contemporary uses and misuses, drinking and problem drinking, theories of the causes of alcoholism and its treatment. Effects of alcohol on the nervous system, and the legal status of intoxication and alcoholism, are reviewed in detail.
