Abstract

Brief review is presented of the first-year work of the urban transportation studies in upstate new york and those studies conducted by the tri-state transportation commission for the new york metropolitan area. Goals and patterns of development are summarized. Person-miles of urban and intercity travel and ton-miles of goods transportation are summarized in figures. Goods movement by all means of transportation are reviewed. A long-range speculative look was taken of transportation fifty years from now when tube transport, vertical and short take-off and landing aircraft, high-speed trains, and automatic guide-ways show automobiles may be fully operational. A preliminary course for the future is charted which must now be more fully delineated to provide efficient operation of new york's transportation system.
