Abstract

Many companies in the transportation sector invest in intelligent tools for fleet management. Competition for customers is fierce in many segments and margins are relatively low in most transportation corridors. In European railways, fleet management is often a separate function isolated from network planning, other types of operations planning as well as the marketing department functions. At Green Cargo, the largest rail freight operatorin Sweden, efforts are made to bridge the gap between the different groups within operations planning and furthermore to take broader perspectives to be able to achieve high fleet utilisation which is fundamental for competitiveness. In this paper, various measures that can increase the abilityto plan for more efficient fleet management are reviewed. For the covering abstract see E134653.
