Abstract

The report examines the effectiveness of a comprehensive fleet management package applied to drivers of a large Melbourne Transport Company. The package included two post-license driver training courses, a hiring procedure which included an assessment drive and a Driver Training Co-ordinator with overall accident cost management responsibility. Effectiveness was assessed primarily in terms of accident involvement, including attributed responsibility but other measures, such as drivers' perceptions of the courses, driving generally, safety and their jobs were also examined. The study concluded that the overall package of measures was successful in reducing the drivers' accident involvement but it was not possible to tell whether the package would have been as successful without the training course.
