Abstract

FleetSafe is the first collaborative public-government occupational road safety initiative involving a model policy and implementing guidelines in Australia. The FleetSafe Policy has been adopted in all eleven Southern Sydney Regional Association Councils. Recent analysis of council insurance crash data for the councils has shown a 13 per cent drop in crash frequency rate and a 5 per cent reduction in crash costs over the four years in which FleetSafe data has been collected. The RTA is considering the potential use of the FleetSafe experience as a way of demonstrating best practice to other councils and as potentially a way of establishing fleet safety “community centres of excellence” to promote the adoption of fleet safety more widely. This paper will: 1. Explain what FleetSafe entails; 2. Examine the data evaluation and trends; 3. Look at what worked, what didn’t and consider why; and 4. Consider the future possibilities for FleetSafe and its application to the wider NSW and Australian contexts.
