Abstract

Investigations of pedestrian-involved crashes commonly report information regarding the person(s) who are struck by a vehicle. This paper seeks to expand on these findings by examining the characteristics of drivers involved in pedestrian crashes. All casualty crashes in Victoria are reported to Victoria Police and held on the VicRoads casualty crash database. Data for the period 1994 - 1998 were analysed. This paper focuses on driver involvement in pedestrian crashes by age, and also age differences between the striking driver and the age of the struck pedestrian. Temporal factors, such as time of day were examined. This paper uses exposure data (km travelled) by age so as to gain a more accurate reflection of driver crash involvement. It was evident that older drivers have a high crash risk and tend to be overinvolved in pedestrian crashes with a young or older pedestrian being struck.
