Abstract

This paper presents a method for evaluating the physical changes that take place in a sprayed seal when it exhibits a full or flushed appearance. The work investigates a small number of samples taken from roads that had exhibited flushing. Samples were obtained from Victoria and South Australia. A digital image analysis process was used to obtain measurements of seal properties so that the differences between the wheelpath and non-wheelpath areas could be considered. The image analysis method was compared with conventional visual appraisal methods. The work is of an investigatory nature to determine if the digital image processing method employed shows promise for wider application.
