Abstract

According to focus groups held in December 1999, travelers in Minnesota prefer to receive route specific road conditions. They prefer not to have to listen to a lot of information not relevant to their specific travel plans. They prefer timely and current information. When asked in focus groups which media they preferred, cable television and the Internet were rated high. Information kiosks were rated low. Minnesota is conducting operational tests of Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) designed to increase traveler access options for road condition information primarily in Greater Minnesota. Projects implemented, evaluated and reported in this paper include the #SAFE cell phone system, the Tripusa.com Internet site, information kiosks, a statewide 800#, and a Twin Cities cable television initiative.
