Abstract

The forum was designed to accomplish the following: inform private and public sector organizations and associations of the importance of a classified driver licensing system and the need for participation in the Driver License Compact; report on current public and private activities in support of these initiatives; and determine actions that Forum participants can take in support of improved state driver licensing programs to advance truck safety on our highways. The presentations made at the Forum addressed the following topics: industry need for the driver license compact and classified licensing of commercial drivers; driver license compact and classified licensing: promotion efforts and state experience; telecommunications and driver identification: essential elements of a driver control management system; a state legislator's perspective; attacking the problem: where do we go from here?
