Abstract

Visual fields and prospective four-year accident records of over 40000 drivers were examined in order to study the need for a peripheral vision standards as a licensing requirement. In general, there is no significant evidence to suggest that drivers with total visual fields of 140 degrees or less have poorer driving records than those with fields of 160 degrees or greater. Based on these results, no special restrictions of drivers with limited peripheral vision are warranted.
