Abstract

Drilled shaft reinforced concrete footings for the support of large highway signboards can be designed to enalbe them to resist major wind loads. The problem is solved by an assumption of the soil pressure distribution along the embedded lenp;th of the footing resisting an overturning moment due to wind. The reliability of this assumtiong has been verified by conside- rable research. The concept of passive smil pressure , also used in the solution is a recongized design procedure in the field of sm1l mechanics.
