Abstract

The major requirement for developing mathematical models that adequately predict the steady-state cornering stiffness (or cornering force versus a steady slip angle) as a function of the design and geometry of the pneumatic tyre has been the need to analyse and to predict the stability and control of pneumatic-tyred vehicles. Comparison of theoretical predictions with experimental data indicates that the "running band" model is a good first-order approximation of the lateral nonstationary characteristics of pneumatic tyres.
