Abstract

The study was carried out to establish if a special surface treatment of gravel roads leads to smaller, larger or unchanged safety margins in driver behaviour. Results showed that the drivers drive approximately 2 km/h faster after the surface treatment. But the safety margin despite the increase in speed, was larger after the surface treatment due to the considerably improved friction. The reason for the drivers not utilizing the higher friction to an even higher speed was probably the fact that they did not want to expose themselves to higher side accelerations.
