The assessment of the developments in transport technologies and of the impacts that these will have on future transport systems is key to inform the transport policy-making process. The paper reports on the methods and results of the forecast and assessment of telematics technologies in the road transport sector which are expected to have a significant impact on transport systems in the European Union and the development of the Common Transport Policy. Based on a hierarchical model of transport systems, a structured investigation of the potential of the telematics functions for different vehicle concepts is carried out. Technology trajectories and impact developments in the efficiency area are provided over a long-term time horizon under different scenario conditions and policy conditions to support deployment are highlighted.
