Abstract

Interest in passive safety has increased in the UK following the Highways Agency Advice Note TA89/05 on the use of passively safe signposts, traffic signal posts and lighting columns and Mott MacDonald's passive safety seminars. However, there is a lack of data on passive safety, both to provide information on where the products would be best employed and to prove its positive effects. Understanding single-vehicle accidents and the performance of roadside elements was an objective of a 3-year European project called RISER (Roadside Infrastructure for Safer European Roads). The UK partner in the project was the Vehicle Safety Research Centre (VSRC) at the University of Loughborough. Passive safety systems in use in the UK include Lattix posts, distributed in the UK by Signpost Solutions (Signfix), Alcoa 114mm aluminium traffic signal poles from NAL, and composite posts from Jerol. Passive safe signal installations have used a Dot Plug disconnection system.
