Abstract

In the presented system, "Virtual Toll Plazas" are created by solar powered roadside mounted infrared beacons which broadcast identification (ID) number, place, time stamp, cost information, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) services and a digital signature to a precisely defined area on the street below. Enforcement is performed by mobile infrared handheld readers. The system is a perfect fit for any free flow toll situation and also copes for "Unenforceable" vehicles, e.g. foreign trucks.
