Abstract

In summary, safe freeway design includes: 1. elimination of roadside obstacles by removal of boulders, trees, other obstacles, steep fills, severe ditch sections, and by the use of adequate guardrails with non-letal ends where obstacles cannot be eliminated properly; 2. avoidance of cross-median accidents by provision of wide medians or impenetrable median barriers; 3. clear view of the roads ahead where roads diverge or where any unusual condition exist; 4. generous standardized exit ramp geometry, provided with adequate and non-ambigous signing.
