Abstract

While it has been known for some time that accident rates are considerably lower on controlled-access freeways that on conventional roads, the California study is part of a continuing research effort to further reduce accidents. It was conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads by a research team of the Division of Highways, California Department of Public Works.
