Freeway modifications to increase traffic flow.

Abstract

This report consists of a synthesis of currently available information pertaining to roadway cross section modifications that can be made to increase the capacity of the existing freeway. Modifications such as narrowing lanes and utilizing the shoulder as an additional travel lane are the methods addressed. Also, related accident and safety analysis resulting from these modifications are discussed in detail. The report will be of interest to the planners, operators, and maintainers of existing freeway facilities by modifying lanes, shoulders of combinations of both. The report contains charts, tables and drawings applicable to such modifications. (Author/publisher)
