Abstract

This Transportation Research Record contains 16 papers concerned with freight transportation. Specific topics discussed include the following: border crossing clearance systems; U.S.-Mexico commercial border crossing process; intermodal freight transport between Europe and Asia; freight villages; carrier collaboration; a commodity distribution model; off-peak deliveries to restaurants in Manhattan, New York; a dynamic freight assignment model; impacts of freight truck diversion following changes in interstate truck weight limits; estimating freight transportation system capacity, flexibility, and degraded-condition performance; trip generation rates for large elevators; adequacy assessment of America's transportation policies; trucking industry reactions to new hours-of-service rules; an innovative truck-trailer configuration; oversize and overweight permitting system; and virtual commercial vehicle compliance stations. The 2006 series of the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board consists of approximately 820 papers selected from 2,800 submissions after rigorous peer review. The peer review for each paper published in this volume was coordinated by the sponsoring committee acknowledged at the end of the text; members of the sponsoring committees for the papers in this volume are listed on page II. Many of these papers were presented at the 85th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board in January 2006. (Author/publisher)
