Abstract

The objective of this seminar was to identify the appropriate programme of action, at the intergovernmental transport ministers level, to obtain the best balance between the wealth creating characters of freight transport and its damaging effects upon the environment. Papers are provided on: a) the nature, scale, and significance of the adverse effects; b) methods currently used to reduce the problem. These include both transport policy measures such as speed limit restrictions and improvements to vehicle design; c) developments in freight logistics organization; and d) the effects of transport policies upon choice of freight transport modeand transport organization.
