Abstract

The UMTRI dataset of Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents, 1980-1982, provides detailed descriptions of all medium and heavy trucks involved in a fatal accident in the continental United States, excluding Alaska, during the years 1980 through 1982. In particular, it gives information on the vehicle and cargo that is not contained in the computerized data from the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS), The UMTRI file is a combination of telephone surveys, mail surveys, Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety (BMCS) accident reports matched with FARS cases, and supplementary data coded from police accident reports.
