Abstract

It is concluded that: (1) the likelihood of hitting the nose as compared to the side of an impact attenuator is independent of the type of impact attenuator; (2) for every three accidents on the nose of an impact attenuator, one occurs at the side; and (3) the probability of injury in a collision with a steel drum impact attenuator without side panels is significantly greater than with a steel drum attenuator with side panels.
