Abstract

This article is a translation of chapter 13 in the Code of Practice for Soil Mechanics in Road Construction (Geoteknikk i veguybbing, Haandbok 016, ISBN 82-7207-272-6) from NRRL (Norwegian Directorate of Roads, Oslo). This is, to a great extent, based on the results of the seven years of research made in Norway from 1968, where the NRRL participated in the cooperative effort "Frost Action in Soils". A series of publications were issued in English and in Nowegian, the most comprehensive being No. 17 (Sikring mot teleskader - in Norwegian only). The article addresses soil mechanics problems related to the construction of roads, bridge abutments, retaining walls and pile foundations under frost action. Aspects of these are: stresses, frost pressures, deformations, frost heaving, frost lifting capacity, reduced bearing capacity during spring thaw. (A)
