Abstract

As part of road user cost study-a research project jointly sponsored by the world bank and the government of India controlled experiments were conducted to determine the fuel consumption of trucks. The objective was to evolve a mathematical relationship between fuel consumption and the factors likely to affect the same. The paper describes the study and the results: speed and power of the vehicle and gradient and roughness of the road affect the fuel consumption significantly The results can be used in selecting optimum speeds and to choose appropriate geometric standards for roads with a view to save fuel.
