Due to fuel prices and the climate change discussions more drivers will force the industry to consider new technologies to reduce fuel consumption.Beside new cars and engines, driver assistance systems like navigation systems will as well have to support the driver in saving fuel. One option for a navigation system is to calculate a fuel efficient route. For this application, a fuel estimation model has been developed within the project ECO2Nav. The paper shows results from driving tests carried out by the Institute of Traffic Management and presents a fuel calculation model for use in future navigation systems.
