Abstract
An article introducing a fully developed, economic lightweight gantry for use on motorways instead of the heavy steel ones that have traditionally been deployed. With Active Traffic Management systems forecast to increase substantially over the next few years, with 1000 plus gantries (estimate) being installed in England alone, it is argued that a system where the gantry boom weighs only 35kg/metre and are relatively easy to install should be looked at. Unlike the heavy steel systems that require expensive high containment barriers to protect against vehicle impact the lightweight ones are a passively safe alternative.
