Abstract

There appears to be a growing and disturbing trend in unscrupulous activities regarding the replacement of vehicle airbags. While there is no federal legislation requiring airbag replacement in vehicles that are repaired after crashes, some states do have requirements, and others leave the responsibility to consumers. This article looks at the problems that arise in the replacement of factory airbags and the approaches that have been adopted by some states. Given the high replacement cost for airbags, the market for salvaged, stolen, and fake airbags is growing, and the results of using improper airbags can be deadly.
