Functional analysis of frontal collision avoidance systems.

Abstract

The paper deals with the functional analysis of frontal collision avoidance systems (FCAS) for ground vehicles. The frontal collision avoidance systems are designed to tackle particular safety concerns. This paper describes the approach used to analyse the system by taking into account the safety requirements. The approach is based on the functional decomposition and safety analysis. In the functional decomposition, the solution for the targeted problem is decomposed into finer granularity based on its functions by using ASA (Structured Analyses and Automata) tools. For instance, a FCAS is separated into sensing, processing, HMI, and actuation. Each sub-function is then decomposed further into lower layers. The safety analyses based on safety requirements and functional decomposition have been conducted using failure mode effect and criticality analysis (FMECA) to identify the safety functions and safety measures to cope with hazards.
