Abstract

VicRoads, the State Road Authority of Victoria, Australia, has undertaken a 4 year study into the functional durability of Open Graded Asphalt. Two functional aspects studied were tyre road noise and vehicle generated water spray. The paper outlines the application of technologies developed for measurement of tyre road noise and vehicle generated water spray as well as information on the results of surveys undertaken on 41 sections of highly trafficked freeway pavement. The research presented in this paper is aimed to ascertain information on the durability of the OGA functional properties over time with respect to noise and water spray reduction under local conditions in Melbourne.
