Abstract

The functional, technical and visual requirements for public lighting are discussed. The improvement of the presentation of information to the road user is the main functional requirement. The visual requirements can be deduced from the functional requirement of enabling drivers to follow the road and to avoid a collision. Based on a classification of roads an attempt is made to quantify the technical lighting requirements. National and international recommendations are given and some principles of lighting and glare are explained.
