Abstract

The author states that the practical value of research is increased drastically if it influences contracts between authorities and contractors. This implies leaving the rules for development of scientific knowledge in order to translate fundamental research results to practical applicable specifications for bituminous mixtures. It also implies changing existing design and construction methods. The author addresses design considerations for the bituminous mixture and for the road or pavement. Furthermore, he deals with the following design matters: (1) response models; (2) addition of structural and material induced damage; (3) mechanical properties; and (4) estimation of accuracy in mix design. design. Following this, a presentation of results concerning permanent deformation, fatigue and rutting is provided.
